Taking A Deeper Look Into BDSM

bdsm info

The mental health community has few concerns about the sexual practice known as BDSM. Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism, better known as BDSM, has become a popular mental health topic. Psychiatrists questioned if people who practice BDSM are suffering from psychological conditions. So, they decided to conduct a study to determine why people prefer it to other sexual practices. Researchers looked at several factors that may prompt humans to engage in these unusual sex acts. Learn more by reading the content provided in the article below.

“Paraphilia” Classification

Psychiatrists have classified BDSM sex games as “paraphilia” in the latest edition of DSM-5. Paraphilia is a term utilized to describe a strange sexual fixation. Members and advocates of BDSM were not very happy when they discovered what the mental health community did. In fact, many went public by denying their preferred sex practice as a mental health issue. For fear of retribution, others decided to keep their opinions to themselves. Whatever the case might be, BDSM is still classified as a paraphilia.

On a positive note, BDSM is not labeled a mental disorder by the DSM-5. However, the DSM-5 added an exception to its label for BDSM. If those involved in BDSM are harmed in any way, it becomes a mental disorder. In other words, as long as no one is injured by the unusual sex practice, it is not a mental health issue.

Sex With A Hint Of Pain

Some psychiatrists disagree with DSM-5 because they feel there is no harm in enjoying sex with a touch of pain. These experts believe since there is no factual evidence to support a mental health condition, BDSM should not be stigmatized as such.

One of the latest studies published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine on May 16, finds people who practice BDSM games are psychologically better off than members of the general public.

The Nyenrode Business University psychologist who conducted the research later released a statement. Andreas Wismeijer claims her research validates practitioners of BDSM were or were not different from the general public. She added BDSM practitioners who differed from the general public did so in a “more favorable direction.”

A Healthy Sex Fixation

While some people focus little on their sexual relations, others are fixated on theirs. Is it normal for someone to be fixated on sex? Well, members of the BDSM community believe it is perfectly normal. Of course, some psychiatrists do not agree because they claim sex fixation is emotionally and mentally harmful.

Wismeijer reached out to the general public to request they complete psychological questionnaires, which she would later be incorporated into her research. A total of 1336 participants took part in the survey. Of the 1336 participants, 902 were members of the BDSM community. The remaining 434 participants were not involved in BDSM. The questionnaires targeted several sensitive topics, including the style of attachment, personality, and sensitivity to rejection in both well-being and relationships.

After tallying in the results, Wismeijer determined that people who practice BDSM did not show signs of being “more troubled” than members of the general public. The lead researcher claims the surveys did not prove that BDSM practitioners were more “extroverted” than the non-participants.

Summary

Hentai BDSM games are growing in popularity at an exponential pace. Thanks to Wismeijer’s latest research, BDSM practitioners have proven to have the same or higher level of mentality as the public. There is no doubt, that some practitioners continue to reframe from speaking publicly about their preferred sex practices. However, others refuse to permit the global mental health community to criticize BDSM. Until evidence says otherwise, BDSM practitioners will continue doing what they love.
