Reading Time: 4 minutes

At breakfast the next morning I suggested to Tiffany that we drive into the nearby city as I had some shopping to do, she said she would like that as she wanted to have a look around it being her first time in this area.

“What time are you expecting Erin and Mamiko home.”

Sometime after 3.00pm so it will give us a few hours to do some sightseeing as well as the shopping.”

We left at nine thirty and spent a few hours driving around the city sightseeing and ended up for lunch at a lovely little restaurant on a hillside overlooking the city. Then it was shopping; we eventually arrived home at about 2.30pm.

It being another hot summers day we both changed into something more appropriate for the seaside. Tiffany wore a white skirt and T-shirt, which accentuated her lovely breasts, while I wore just a pair of shorts.

We sat outside on the deck on the shady side of the house talking and having a beer while we waited for Erin And Mamiko to arrive.

By 4.00pm I was feeling a little concerned that they had not arrived home but thought that maybe they had left later or the traffic had been heavy and delayed them.

I excused myself and went into the kitchen to prepare something for dinner, as it was a lovely warm day I thought salad with ham would make a nice meal so I prepared the salad and put it in the fridge until it was needed.

I joined Tiffany on the deck again and we sat talking for a while. Looking at my watch I saw that it was now 5.30pm and still no sign of Erin and Mamiko, I thought about phoning Mamiko’s mother but decided not to as I did not want to make her feel worried just because I was feeling that way.

At 6.12pm the doorbell rang, on opening the door I found two police officers outside.

“I’m officer Karl Jones and this is officer Susan Day,” he said showing me his shield.

“Are you Rick Wilding?

“Yes,” I said. “Why what is the matter?

“May we come in sir?”

“Yes of course.”

They entered and followed me into the living room.

“Better sit down Rick, I’m afraid we have some bad news for you,” officer Day said.

I sat down and just at that moment Tiffany walked into the room and finding two police officer’s she asked, “What is it Rick, is it about Erin and Mamiko?”

“This is Tiffany a friend of ours. These officers are Karl Jones and Susan Day,” I said introducing them.

“Please sit down Tiffany,” officer Day said.

Tiffany joined me on the settee.

“I am sorry to have to inform you that both Erin and Mamiko were killed in a car accident this afternoon,” officer Jones said.

I could not believe it. “How did it happen I asked.”

Were not sure, someone saw fresh skid marks on the highway which led them to believe that a car had maybe gone over the cliff, they stopped and looking over the cliff saw a car on the rocks below so they rang the police. The rescue team abseiled down the cliff as there was no other way to reach the car, they found the two bodies but both were dead. We got your address from the drivers licences we found, however we will need you to come in and identify the bodies, in the morning will do.

“I know how you must feel, but I have to ask would you mind if we took a look around the house?”

“Why?” I asked him.

“Just routine in cases like this, seeing both the deceased lived here but were not related to you.”

“I see, then please look around by all means.”

Officer Day said she would look around downstairs and left. Then officer Jones went to look around the rest of the house.

I suddenly realised that officer Day may find the way I had set up the downstairs room somewhat strange, also she may look in the cupboard and see some of the other items I had purchased at the adult shop a short time ago for when Amy and Lisa and their husbands came to visit us and may wonder what was happening here, especially finding me alone with Tiffany.

When he returned he said, “Could you tell me what you were doing today Sir?”

Before I could answer him officer Day returned, I waited wondering what she might say. To my surprise she looked at me as she said, “Everything looks alright down below.”

“OK, well could you answer my question now sir.”
I explained that Tiffany and I had been into the city most of the day and arrived home about 2.30pm, expecting Erin and Mamiko to be home between 3.00 and 4.00pm.

He asked me about my relationship with them and I told him that Erin was my live in partner and Mamiko was a friend and companion of Erin’s.

He seemed satisfied and once more apologised for having to be the bearer of bad news, then he and officer Day left.

Tiffany looked at me and said, “Rick I am so sorry, to lose both of them is a real tragedy.”

Later after we had eaten she rang Chris and told him the sad news, she said it would be best if he did not come down, that she would stay and let him know when the funeral was to be held, and would he let Frank and Ted know what had happened.

The next day we went to the mortuary and I identified the two bodies. I was then taken to the police headquarters and was once again questioned about the events of the previous day and about my relationship with Erin and Mamiko. I asked again why I was being questioned and was once more assured that it was just the normal routine in cases like this and was necessary for the coroner’s inquest.

After the coroner’s inquest and funeral I was now on my own. I felt that my life seemed to have suddenly reached a dead end what lay ahead I had no idea. I knew that Erin would want me to remember her but to also get on with my life, make a new start.
