Reading Time: 3 minutes

by Carrie

“Because nothing!” I slammed the door to my bedroom, got out of my evening clothes and left them on the floor for Thisley or one of my maids to pick up in the morning and put on a comfy old black tank top and Levi’s.

I could still hear the dancing music so I turned on the TV, but nothing was on. Then I turned on my stereo, but could hear nothing because of the party. I tried reading some magazines, but I couldn’t so I tossed them all on the floor, rang for the cook, got her out of bed, couldn’t make up my mind what I wanted and sent her back to bed.

A desolate fifteen minutes of torment passed when I heard three timid knocks. I almost rushed to the door, but what if it were Cassidy? Well, I didn’t want to hear about who was getting fucked. I wanted to be left alone since all decency had been abandoned.

Then I thought, who knocks on a door three times then quits? — unless it’s a burglar to see if someone is there. What a perfect opportunity for a burglar to make his move. Well, I was going to catch him right now.

I ran to the door, opened it, and instead of a wiry thief there was that silly stripper who had followed me to my room. I played it cool, leaned against the door frame just to let him know that he couldn’t come in.

I peeked down the hall, not too much to give myself away, but enough to see what was going on, not that I felt I was missing out on anything, but this is my duplex and though my staff is keeping an eye on things I have to look in every once in a while and make sure everything is ship-shape. I turned back to the stripper and gave him the once over.

He had this hang-dog look. Pretty girls get them all the time and I was in no mood for his adolescent pining. “It’s not my position Ms. Dupree…” I turned away from him, “I want you to know that I heard what your friend Cassidy said to you and, well, I think you did the right thing by leaving, and I want you to know, and I’m speaking not only for myself, if you’re not at the party, there is no party.”

I’m not a sucker for sweet talk, but it is rude to dismiss sincerity. I played a close hand and said nothing, but felt glad he said what he had said, because it was true. He then asked me, “May I wash up?” He didn’t look dirty. “I haven’t had a break since the party started, and it would be awfully nice if I could.”

I should have sent him down the hall and be rid of him, but then I don’t like strangers deep into family quarters especially where my little girl is. So I had no choice but to let him in, “Just go around my bed. There’s a hallway to the bathroom.”

He started to go but got lost, “Go left, the shower and bath quarter is on your right, and don’t go up the stairway; that’s to my study. No one is allowed there but me. Just keep on ahead .” I watched him, just in case he’d slip out a crow bar or whatever else these smart ass burglars use to break into things.
